The Restaurants
Carved from special wood
Our rooms exude a special charm through the different parts of the restaurant, originating through the gradual setup of the company. The property was in the “Batzenhäusle” and the old restaurant located in it. This listed property dated from 1777 is still in its original form and installation today and through its Southern German-Italian baroque style is representative for old Nuremberg before its destruction.
The lights located here, called Lüsterweibchen are all original carvings from the end of the previous century. This has only been executed by two studios on Lake Constance but they have not been able to achieve the uniqueness.
The old restaurant is a non-smoking area. It sits a maximum of 60 people and can be reserved as a separate room for your individual events.
A further room in the “Batzenhäusl” is the adjacent room for a maximum of 30 people which is available as a separate non-smoking room.

Experience tradition
Experience the Gastro- & Hotel History since 1897
In the 120 years old established Hotel & Wine Restaurant Steichele located in the old part of the city, you can experience the flair and the atmosphere from the old history of Nuremberg in the listed rooms and original carvings. Since 2012 the company has passed over to the son Bernhard Steichele (Generation V) and in so doing the new start-up of the limited partnership „Das Steichele“.
The Steichele has been located directly in Nuremberg since 1897. In this historic restaurant, originating from the years of rapid industrial expansion in Germany, through the family Steichele, traditional Franconian and light cuisine is served in the garden or in the wine restaurant. The processed products come from selected suppliers and producers from the region and in this way the freshness and purity of all used products is guaranteed. Moreover, chosen wines from the Franconian region, excellent wines from the South Tyrol and the estate of Rhineland-Palatinate as well as from our own growing area can be enjoyed, tasted and purchased.
The company has been managed and characterized by five generations of the Steichele family. Everything started in1892, when Anton Steichele (Generation I) began to run the "first and only Italian wine tasting cellar" in the vaults of the Adler street 38, previously "Esterhazykeller". Today the party location "Unrat" can be found there. At the same time Joseph Steichele ran, the brother of Anton, from 1886 in the Nadlersgasse 31 another well-known wine restaurant in Nuremberg: "Zu den zwei goldenen Engeln".
In 1987 Anton Steichele acquired the property in the Jakobiner street 50, today Knorr street 2. His son Georg (Generation II) built here the alehouse "Zum Batzenhäusl" and at the end of 1898 converted the existing late baroque craftsmen workshops as a dining area and a warehouse to a kitchen Wirtschaftsküche. In 1929 Wilhelm Steichele took over the company and managed the 3rd generation Hausschoppen "Mußbacher Eselshaut", which even today is delivered from the state winegrowing school in Neustadt to the Weinstraße.
Fortunately, the building has remained untouched from the night of bombing on the 2nd of January 1945, so that the property has hardly been damaged and was one of the first restaurants to reopen following the second world war.
In 1954 the guest house was extended to a hotel with 12 rooms and the restaurant now offered space for 120 people through the facility of the "Badischen Stuben". In1966 an additional extension of the house was pending, then the wine bar as well as the wine shop was opened. Here, the wines of the principal supplier at that time were sold, the state viticultural school in Neustadt and central winery Baden vintners’ cooperative. The 4th generation took over the company with the son Georg and his wife Barbara in1972. From now on in 1978 the new building in1978 with 32 rooms was in the waiting line which eight year later was further extended with another 17 rooms. A conference room and a banquet room were also established and the wine bar once again enlarged.
Wine still played a significant role on the premises of Steichele, so that in 1990, when its own vineyard was acquired in the Palatinate, which is followed by the state academy and research institute Rhineland-Palatinate in Mußbach. In1996 the son Michael Steichele (generation V) took over the company. The management was taken over in 2003 by daughter Veronika and son Bernhard Steichele (generation IV), who in the following year started with general restauration work in the hotel. During this time, 29 hotel rooms were redesigned. Further renovations and modifications were carried out in the following years and the menu and wine list of the restaurant was extended and provided with a new layout.
In 2012 Bernhard Andreas Steichele took over the company and formed the limited company "Das Steichele". Since 2013 "Das Steichele" has been distinguished in the Slow Food guide.

The Steichele still works today according to the principles of slow food.
“Three times a day, with every meal, decisions are reached with far-reaching consequences. Our food is inseparably linked with politics, the economy, culture, knowledge, farming, health and environment.”
For this reason, our food should be good, clean and fair.
Good: tasty, nutritious, healthy, appeal to the senses and enjoyable.
Clean: manufactured, without putting pressure on the resources of the earth, the eco-systems or the environment and without causing harm to humans, nature or animals.
Fair: paying attention to the social equality, with a reasonable payment and fair conditions for everyone — from the production via the sales to consumption.
